Every $300 MIG welder on the market claims 200A output. But how many of them actually deliver it?
We put the ARCPEX MIG200 on a clamp meter under real welding load — not a lab bench, not a resistive dummy load — and measured what actually comes out of the machine.
The Number Most $300 Welders Won't Show You
We've tested several competing machines in the same price range. The pattern is consistent: machines labeled "200A" typically measure around 170–180A at the work piece under real welding conditions.
That gap matters. Here's why:

Why Rated Amps Don't Always Mean Real Amps
Welding machine ratings are often measured under ideal conditions — specific input voltage, specific wire, specific ambient temperature. In a real garage or shop, conditions vary. The question isn't what the spec sheet says. It's what the machine delivers when you're actually welding.
There are a few reasons a machine might fall short of its rated output:
- Undersized inverter board — core components can't sustain peak output under load
- Aluminum welding leads — higher resistance means more voltage drop before the arc
- Thermal throttling — the machine reduces output to protect itself under sustained load
- Input voltage sag — on a shared 110V circuit, voltage drops under load, reducing output
How We Tested It
We used a calibrated clamp meter to measure actual welding current at the work piece — not at the input. Test conditions:
- Input: 220V dedicated circuit
- Wire: ER70S-6 .030" solid wire, 75/25 Argon/CO2 shielding gas
- Material: 1/4" mild steel plate
- Settings: Maximum output, manual mode
- Measurement point: clamp meter at the work lead, at the work piece
What About 110V?
On 110V, output is reduced — this is expected and normal for any dual-voltage machine. The MIG200 on 110V is suitable for sheet metal, thin wall tubing, and repair welds up to around 3/16". For anything thicker, 220V is the right choice.
